The moving parts of most pianos are made of wood, felt, leather, metal, and some plastic. Over time, these parts flex and compress, causing the piano's movements to be more difficult. During the process of regulation, we compare the current condition of the piano with the manufacturer's original specifications. We then follow a 42-step process, making the necessary adjustments to allow the piano to play evenly.
Below are examples of visible regulation needs from a Grand piano and the end result after regulating the action.
